Technical architect
Technical architects design the technical structure of the organization's digital health services: the components, platforms, hosting, integration patterns, and non-functional qualities such as security, performance, and resilience. They work closely with developers and DevOps engineers, give technical leadership to delivery teams, and make sure services are built to last and safe to run.

In a digital health care organization
- Clinical services often need high availability and fast recovery, so technical designs must plan for failure and degraded running.
- Designs must protect confidential health information through encryption, access control, and audit by default.
- Services connect to many clinical systems and shared platforms, often through HL7 FHIR APIs and messaging, so integration patterns are central to the design.
- Technical design choices, such as caching, retries, and time handling, can cause clinical hazards, so architects contribute to safety cases.
- Legacy clinical systems and medical devices may constrain choices of technology, networking, and hosting.
UK GDaD PCF role description
A technical architect provides technical leadership and architectural design.

cloud architect
Cloud architects are responsible for converting the technical features of a project into the architecture to lead to the final product. To develop technical cloud strategy, they have in-depth knowledge of the architectural principles and services, assisting with cloud migration efforts, review workload architectures, and provide guidance on how to address high-risk issues. They typically perform in a pre-sales capacity and are often asked to deliver proof-of-concept projects, topical workshops, and lead implementation projects. They team up with DevOps engineers to build the appropriate technologies.
