Infrastructure engineer
Infrastructure engineers design, build, run, and support the networks, servers, storage, cloud platforms, and hosting that the organization's digital services depend on. They keep this infrastructure available, secure, and recoverable, and work with suppliers and architects to change it safely. In health care, one infrastructure failure can stop clinical systems across hospitals and community services at once.

In a digital health care organization
- Clinical systems need very high availability, so infrastructure is designed for resilience and changes are planned around clinical activity.
- Engineers take part in on-call rotas, because infrastructure faults at night or at weekends can stop patient care.
- Networks connect medical devices, such as infusion pumps, patient monitors, and imaging equipment, which need network segmentation and careful change following IEC 80001-1.
- Health care is a frequent target for ransomware, so backups must be protected, tested, and restorable within agreed recovery times.
- Infrastructure often mixes old and new technology, including legacy clinical systems that cannot easily be patched, so engineers put compensating controls in place.
UK GDaD PCF role description
An infrastructure engineer designs, builds, manages and supports the infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and services to the public.
