DevOps engineer
DevOps engineers build and run the tools, pipelines, environments, and platforms that let the organisation's teams deliver digital health services safely and often. They automate build, test, release, and infrastructure, make services observable and resilient, and help teams keep clinical systems available when patients and clinicians need them.

In a digital health care organisation
- Many services support care around the clock, so deployments, monitoring, and recovery must keep downtime to a minimum, including out of hours.
- Release pipelines produce evidence for clinical safety cases, such as test results, change records, and the exact version deployed.
- Environments may hold confidential health information, so engineers control access, protect secrets, and keep live data out of test environments.
- Health services are common targets for cyber attacks, so pipelines and platforms build in security scanning, patching, and tested backups.
- Some services must meet strict standards for availability and disaster recovery, agreed with clinical and operational leads.
UK GDaD PCF role description
Commonly referred to as ‘DevOps engineers’, development operations engineers support the development and operation of software through tools, environments and practices.
In this role, you will be responsible for underpinning good development processes including managing tools and testing environments, central code control, maintaining development standards and writing software that automates systems.
ESCO occupations and skills
ESCO lists the skills and knowledge that employers usually need (essential) or may need (optional) for each occupation. Use them as a checklist for development conversations.
cloud DevOps engineer
Cloud DevOps engineers implement and manage continuous software delivery systems and methodologies. This includes managing and configuring code repositories, build services, automated testing, and deployment mechanisms. For cloud-based workloads, a Cloud DevOps Engineer define and deploy infrastructure as code, automating test and development environments. They can define and configure automated disaster recovery solutions that meet business objectives.
