Levels

1. Awareness

You can:

• explain why research with patients and care staff needs informed consent, safeguarding, and care with personal data
• follow the team's consent, safeguarding, and data handling procedures in research sessions

2. Working

You can:

• plan research sessions that get informed consent and protect participants' wellbeing and privacy
• adapt sessions for people who are unwell, distressed, or in vulnerable circumstances, and know when to stop
• recognise and report safeguarding concerns that come up in research

3. Practitioner

You can:

• judge when research needs formal ethics or research governance approval and prepare what it needs
• plan safe research with people in vulnerable circumstances, such as children, people with dementia, and people in crisis
• plan research in clinical settings without disrupting care, working with clinical leads and care staff
• support researchers to look after their own wellbeing after distressing sessions

4. Expert

You can:

• set the organisation's standards for ethical research with patients, carers, and care staff
• assure research practice across teams and advise on high-risk research
• represent research practice to ethics, safeguarding, and governance bodies
